REVIEWS OF CLINICAL SPORTS MEDICINE

The Physician & Sportsmedicine - March, 1994, Vol 22, No 3, page 106

Stanley Herring MD, FACSM - Puget Sound Sports and Spine Physicians, Clinical Associate Professor Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics, University of Washington, Seattle, USA

Not another sports medicine book' proclaim Peter Brukner and Karim Khan in the preface of Clinical Sports Medicine. They then proceed to demonstrate why their two-author text has merit in an increasingly crowded area of publication. Their argument is successful. Clinical Sports Medicine is very well written and cohesive and is divided into six major sections, each with several chapters. The major sections are 'Fundamental Principles', 'Regional Problems', 'Enhancing Sports Performance', 'Special Groups of Participants', 'Management of Medical Problems' and 'Practical Sports Medicine'. Their text is not encyclopaedic, nor are all problems covered in great detail. Drs Brukner and Khan provide suggested readings at the end of each chapter in lieu of formal references.

Nonoperative care garners the lion's share of the book. The text is symptom-oriented, is well-integrated, and reflects the authors' multidisciplinary approach to sports medicine. The book incorporates concepts usually found in physical therapy texts, and this cross-fertilization makes for uniquely readable text.

The photographs, illustrations, tables, and charts are extraordinary. They complement a text that suggests functional solutions for sports problems and includes discussion of key aspects of rehabilitation.

Clinical Sports Medicine offers a valuable perspective that's different from other sports medicine books. The text should be part of any sports medicine library and will be particularly helpful for rehabilitation information. The price is certainly a bargain, so I hope the publishers make the text easy to obtain in the United States.
