REVIEWS OF CLINICAL SPORTS MEDICINE

British Journal of Sports Medicine

This, the second edition, has been thoroughly updated and revamped (see the section on Achilles tendons!). It is a superb book for the clinician working with athletes, outlining the treatment of injuries in a straightforward and clear way. It is such a change to read a book written by physicians rather than surgeons, with consequently a much more functional approach! This book should be read by all sports physicians and physiotherapists in training and should be by the desk of anyone likely to treat athletes' injuries, GPs and specialists alike. read more...

Review by Karl Landorf Dip App Sc (Pod), Grad Dip Ed

It has been 8 years since the 1st edition of this text, which sold over 20,000 copies and placed Australian sports medicine at the forefront of sports medicine around the world. This edition is not just a brief rehash of the 1st edition, but has a number of additional chapters, new illustrative photos and a radiological images. Most of these changes appear to have been well thought through and markedly improve this already substantial text. read more...

The New Zealand Journal of Sports Medicine

"The world's best clinical sports medicine text just got better. For readers familiar with the first edition, the features that made it so good are still there. For example, most anatomical locations have an ordering of the expected pathology into common, less common and "not to be missed". This is particularly valuable for less experienced clinicians as it provides a perspective on each injury site. This new edition is approximately 50% larger (about 900 pages rather than the 600 pages of the first edition). What has gone into that extra space?" read more...

The Physician & Sportsmedicine

"Clinical Sports Medicine offers a valuable perspective that's different from other sports medicine books. The text should be part of any sports medicine library and will be particularly helpful for rehabilitation information. The price is certainly a bargain, so I hope the publishers make the text easy to obtain in the United States." read more...

WA Medical Forum, Dr. Duncan Sullivan, Sports Physician

"Extensively rewritten to incorporate new research findings into clinical practice -- with seven new chapters the second edition will be a worthwhile upgrade for those who found the first edition useful

The book is easy to read, well set out, with an extensive contents section that makes locating a topic easy

Those needing more information are directed to useful lists of references and websites

It is highly recommended for any GP who practices any type of musculoskeletal medicine. Those doing a lot of this should read cover to cover, for the occasional sports doctor it could act as a useful reference." read more...

The Australian Family Physician

"This Australian produced book of sports medicine is an excellent text and the authors are to be congratulated on such a thorough and comprehensive production."

Australian Sports Medicine Federation (Vic) Newsletter

"A practical clinical sports medicine textbook. I believe this book should be on the shelf of every practitioner who deals with clinical sports medicine."

New Zealand Journal of Sports Medicine

"It is an extremely useful text providing excellent examination and treatment skills."

The Australian Physiotherapy Journal

"The approach that the authors have taken is fundamentally different..... problem orientated, practical, clinically relevant and eminently useable. It categorises the injuries according to symptomatic regions with which the patient would present to the clinician"

Australian Pharmacist

"Presents a readily useable format to the reader making this an excellent reference text on a range of cross-disciplinary issues and management strategies' 'An excellent addition to the armoury...a strength of this book is that it is relevant to the broader sports participants in the community" read more...

From the Experts in Sports Medicine

"This is a wonderful textbook. I recommend it to all practicing physiotherapists and physiotherapy students" - Jenny McConnell, Sydney, Australia

"It has made a big impression - I didn't expect anything so detailed or authoritative. The book represents and enormous amount of work and obviously implies a wonderful grasp of the subject matter." - Professor John Murtagh, Monash University

"It is the best written and laid out sports medicine book I have read (and I have read a few!)" - Simon Bartold, Adelaide

"It looks to be a superb volume and being involved with the local football club, it is just the book I've been looking for." - Matthew Cotter, General Practitioner, Echuca

"The excellence of the massage content throughout this comprehensive book makes 'Clinical Sports Medicine' a necessary addition to the masseur's library" - Wayde Clews, Masseur, Australian Institute of Sport

"The best sports medicine textbook for massage therapists" - Robert Granter, Head, Australian Olympic Massage Therapists, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000

"It has struck just the right note; it is comprehensive enough to be useful to specialists but sufficiently practical to be useful to every general practitioner." - Ronald Quirk, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Melbourne

From Satisfied Users of the Second Edition

"Excellent practical book for clinicians. This very practical book that uses symptom-oriented chapters to provide very helpful guidance to anyone who sees sports medicine patients. It is useful for physical therapists (like me) but my colleagues who are doctors and masseurs also use it. I thoroughly recommend it and find its illustrations of physical examination particularly useful" - A reader from Seattle, USA

"Practical sports medicine book for physiotherapists, sports physicians This definitive sports medicine text book of 920 superbly-illustrated pages is the 'gold-standard' of sports medicine books. Its main emphasis is conservative care of musculoskeletal conditions and it is particularly up to date in management of overuse tendon conditions, the latest on shoulder rehabilitation, management of troublesome back problems and the athletic groin. It also covers issues such as enhancing sports performance with nutrition and psychology, traveling with a team and ethical issues in sport. The first edition was a great success but this second edition is a far superior book. And it is exceptional value for money. I strongly recommend those working with athletes and those treating musculoskeletal conditions to check this Australian-Canadian book out fully. It's a gem"  - A physical therapist at Whistler, British Columbia, Canada
