CLINICAL SPORTS MEDICINE FOR MASSAGE THERAPISTS

Why has Clinical Sports Medicine been so popular with massage therapists?

  • Among sports medicine textbooks, it is the only one that truly integrates massage therapy into the treatment plan

  • It provides an inexpensive, authoritative and accessible resource for massage therapists to have in the clinic alongside the specific massage texts.

  • Coauthored by Robert Granter, Remedial Massage Therapist, Australian Olympic Medical Team, 1992, 1996, 2000, this book contains pearls that are not found elsewhere. Robert was Head of the Massage Team in Atlanta and Sydney, and has lectured widely on the role of Massage Therapy in Sports Medicine.

  • As well as detailing massage therapy treatment, it provides useful background medical information, such as interpreting X-rays, when to refer to physicians and physical therapists which is very helpful for massage therapists

  • The symptom oriented layout of the book makes it easy to refer to a relevant section and scan it for potential serious diagnoses, and for other treatment ideas if the patient is progressing slowly.

  • The illustrations of assessment for every body part are particularly helpful. Together with the massage therapist's expert 'feel' for joint and muscle abnormality they permit the massage therapist to be much more confident in her or his assessment.

"The excellence of the massage content throughout this comprehensive book makes
'Clinical Sports Medicine' a necessary addition to the masseur's library"

Wayde Clews, Masseur, Australian Institute of Sport

Specific updates in this edition include:

  • management of what has traditionally been called 'tendinitis' has been completely updated, particularly for Achilles problems and patellar tendon problems. This is vital information for the massage therapist in 2001.

  • Anterior knee pain chapter rewritten to reflect many updates on management of patellofemoral pain and patellar tendinopathy. Co-authored with international authorities on knee pain, Jenny McConnell and Jill Cook the role of massage therapy is highlighted in treating these difficult conditions.

  • Achilles pain chapter outlines the highly successful strengthening program that should be prescribed as part of the treatment of this condition.

  • Core stability is highlighted throughout relevant chapter and the concept of the kinetic chain is addressed consistently throughout all regional chapters

  • 7 new chapters

  • These include a reminder about serious conditions that masquerade as sports injuries (chapter 4).

  • Up to date references that permit you to find original sources where desired

  • Selected recommended readings simplify background study if you wish to read around the subject

"The best sports medicine textbook for massage therapists"
